Osteopathy: optimal health for babies and children

Osteopathy is a gentle and effective method for addressing these common childhood problems. Treatments are specifically tailored for young children, ensuring they are safe and gentle for their sensitive bodies. Our osteopath focuses on the specific needs of each child, making osteopathy a safe choice for their care.

Osteopathy considers both the physical and emotional health of children. It focuses on physical development, as disruptions in this area often affect emotional health. This integrated approach helps identify and treat various problems that impact children’s development.

Diagnosis and
treatment plan

Every osteopathic treatment, including for babies and children, starts with a comprehensive intake and examination. For the intake interview, parents receive a questionnaire to make the discussion more efficient. During the examination, your child usually lies on their back on the treatment table, where we look for movement restrictions in the body.

For babies, our osteopath begins with a gentle check of the feet to help the baby get accustomed to him. He then assesses the mobility of the hips, back, neck, and abdomen. For older children, the examination usually starts with the spine, as with adults, while the child is sitting.

Depending on the specific complaints and where the movement restrictions are located, we start the treatment. The goal is to remove these restrictions and activate the body’s natural self-healing ability. This promotes healing and brings balance to the body.

Treatment techniques

For babies and children

For babies and children, several treatment techniques are available that not only alleviate specific complaints but also contribute to their overall well-being and development. These techniques are all performed gently and manually. You can read about some safe and effective methods on your right.

These approaches support the body’s natural growth and healing, enhancing the overall health and development of the child.

Craniosacral techniques

Gentle manipulations of the skull focusing on the nervous system and skull mobility, reducing tensions and blockages that can arise during birth or from other causes.

Connective tissue techniques

These methods reduce tension in muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues, focusing on releasing adhesions, improving blood circulation, and promoting relaxation in the body.

Visceral techniques

Targeted manual techniques around internal organs improve mobility and the restoration of connective tissue around these organs, helping with digestive problems, respiratory issues, and other internal dysfunctions that affect children’s well-being.

Mobilization techniques

These improve joint movement and flexibility, stimulating blood flow, optimizing innervation, and promoting mobility, which supports natural recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Is osteopathy appropriate for babies and children?

Yes, osteopathy is great for children and babies. It can help with various complaints such as sleep problems, digestive problems and motor problems.

What does an osteopath do for children?

An osteopath treats children by using gentle techniques to remedy loss of movement in their bodies to relieve symptoms and promote their overall health.

How old should a baby be for osteopathic treatment?

Babies can be treated by an osteopath from birth. Early treatments can help with problems such as cramps or preferred posture. If parents without obvious symptoms wish to visit preventively, we recommend scheduling an appointment after 6 weeks.

Common complaints an osteopath can treat in babies are reflux, colic, preferred posture, sleep problems and excessive crying.

What is KISS syndrome in babies?

KISS (Kinematic Imbalance Due to Suboccipital Strain) is a term for problems of babies’ high neck joints leading to asymmetry, causing the baby to develop preferred posture or experience other physical discomfort.

How does osteopathy differ from other treatments like physiotherapy?

An osteopath looks for the root cause of complaints. This involves looking at the whole body and considering it as an integrated system. A physical therapist focuses only on the region where the symptoms are located and makes greater use of exercises to reduce these symptoms. Osteopathy takes a more “hands-on” approach. This is done by moving tissues (e.g., joints, muscles and connective tissue around organs) with the hands.

Is osteopathy scientifically based?

Yes, osteopathy is substantiated by research demonstrating its effectiveness for certain conditions such as abdominal pain, headaches, back pain, neck pain and other musculoskeletal complaints. Research in osteopathy is constantly growing and evolving.

Do I need a referral from a GP?

No, a doctor’s referral is not necessary to visit an osteopath. Clients can make an appointment right away.

Is osteopathy covered by health insurance?

Osteopathy is often partially covered under supplementary insurance policies. It is advisable to check your policy or contact your insurer for specific coverage.

Are there any risks associated with osteopathic treatment?

Osteopathic treatments are generally safe, but as with all medical treatments, there can be risks, especially if treatments are performed by a non-qualified practitioner. Always choose a registered and experienced osteopath.
